Philippine Santo, Baby Jesus
Philippine Santo, Baby Jesus
The practice of creating Santos began in Spain. Religious images were commonly decorated in ornate religious clothing. Today Santos remain a living tradition of religious iconography and folk art in Mexico, Philippines, Vietnam and other countries.
In His left hand, the Infant Jesus holds a miniature globe, representing his kingship over the world. His right hand is raised in blessing, with two fingers bent to reflect Christ's divine and human nature, and the other three fingers raised to symbolize the unity of the Trinity.
This carving was made in the third generation Santo workshop of Nellie Enrique in Manila. Several years ago Nellie retired and closed the workshop, we feel very fortunate to have some of her work on hand!
