Mud cloth (Bogolanfini) gets it name because it is died using natural materials, including fermented mud, sticks, leaves, herbs and grasses. Made from Malian cotton, typically the men weave the long narrow strips on a small back strap loom, which are them sewn together to make the larger cloth. The women then apply the patterns with a complicated technique that is similar to wax resist, although it is all done with careful application of the fermented mud over natural dyes.
